Zoe Studd – Co-founder and director of Mountains to the Sea, Wellington

Zoe is the Co-Founder and Director of the Mountains to Sea Wellington Trust and Project Lead for Love Rimurimu, www.loverimurimu.org.

Zoe’s love for the sea started early, snorkeling around the Wellington region with her dad, where an encounter with an octopus led to a lifelong connection with the ocean.  She has worked as a diver, researcher, environmental policy advisor, and teacher, culminating with her current work in marine education and restoration.

In 2017, Zoe co-founded the Mountains to Sea Wellington Trust (MTSW) with an amazing crew of folks who love the water as much as she does!

In the past year, their team has worked with over 1500 people across Te Upoko o te Ika a Māui, helping connect them to their local marine and freshwater environment –  including MTSW’s ever-popular free community snorkel days.

The Love Rimurimu project is a community initiative to regenerate the underwater forests of Te Whanganui-a-Tara, which began in 2020 with an education programme and is now a community-led restoration effort with many partners.

Zoe will share the Love Rimurimu journey, and how its collaborative approach brings people together to restore the wellbeing and mauri of the Wellington Harbour.
