Our vision of Ngā Manu

What is Ngā Manu?

Since 1974, Ngā Manu has been a cornerstone for the conservation of Aotearoa New Zealand's natural heritage. Managed by the Ngā Manu Trust, this charitable non-profit operates our 14-hectare wildlife reserve on the Kāpiti Coast. Officially opened to the public in 1981, it protects one of the last remnants of coastal lowland swamp forest. Ngā Manu offers visitors an immersive experience in New Zealand’s native flora and fauna, fostering a deep connection to the environment and inspiring efforts in conservation and education.

The future of Ngā Manu

Over the next decade, Ngā Manu will focus on enhancing its role as a leader in conservation, education, and community engagement. We aim to expand our conservation efforts by restoring more native habitats, improving biodiversity, and being involved in cutting-edge research. Education will remain central, with new programming designed to engage younger generations and build awareness of environmental challenges. Additionally, we will strengthen our financial sustainability by expanding ecotourism opportunities, increasing partnerships, and ensuring the long-term viability of the reserve as a treasured resource for both locals and visitors alike.
