Spend a Night with Nature at Ngā Manu

Recently, NZ Herald journalist Melissa Nightingale spent a night immersed in the beauty and wonder of Ngā Manu Nature Reserve in Waikanae. Her story captures the magic of close encounters with New Zealand’s precious native wildlife—from curious kākā climbing on her head to hand-feeding longfin tuna (eels) and witnessing the secret world of the nocturnal kiwi.

Melissa’s visit began with meeting our charismatic birds in the walk-through aviaries and joining the daily eel feeding, before settling in for the night in Theo’s Cottage, our charming accommodation tucked away on the edge of the pond. Her unforgettable journey culminated in a guided Kiwi Night Encounter, where she watched a male kiwi forage under the cover of darkness, mere metres away from the group.
